ANNOUNCEMENTS
Job Opening in District 2 Council Office (Pat Kernighan's Office): Half-time Administrative Position
I am looking for a personable and very organized person to work in my Council office half-time as the Administrative Assistant. For the past two years, Kathy Dwyer has done a superlative job in this position, but she is leaving us in order to pursue her other interests. The desired hours are 9:00am to 1:00pm five days a week, though that is somewhat flexible. The position is eligible for health benefits according to the City plan.
Summary of the job duties:
1. Scheduling Councilmember’s appointments. (using MS Outlook)
2. Answering the phone (this is shared with other staff members as well)
3. Maintaining and updating the Council database (Filemaker).
4. Managing general office organization and supplies
5. Managing the filing system for the volumes of paper that come through the office.
6. Processing paperwork for small financial matters.
7. Organizing logistics for occasional community events (venue, food, etc.)
This is a lot to do in a half-time job, so the ability to juggle a lot of responsibility gracefully is important. Not essential, but extremely helpful would be bilingual ability in Cantonese, Vietnamese or Spanish. If you are interested, please contact Jennie Gerard, Chief of Staff, here. She will email to you a more detailed job description.
California Health Care Reform
Governor Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders have been debating healthcare reform proposals for the past year. The current proposal set forth by Senator Pro Tem Don Perata and Speaker Fabian Núñez is set for a hearing at the Capital on November 14, 2007. Some key elements to this proposal includes the expansion of public programs such as Medi-Cal and Healthy Families; the mandate that all employees must be insured by their employer or a statewide purchasing pool which will include contributions from the employer; and the mandate that all Californians must purchase health insurance. There are some affordability issues that are addressed through tax credits for those who are 450% below the poverty line as well as an exemption for those with a financial hardship or if the price of purchase would exceed more than 6.5% of an individual’s income. For more information please visit the California Health Reform website here: http://calhealthreform.org/. SEARAC will continue to monitor the progress and will keep our friends and partners updated.
