• OAKLAND, WE DID IT! đź‘Źđź‘Źđź‘Ź Today, Council unanimously passed my emergency eviction moratorium, making it California’s STRONGEST #COVID19 city-level moratorium to date.

Effective immediately, it protects renters, small businesses + nonprofits. Governor Gavin Newsom also today established a statewide renter eviction moratorium, though our local ordinance is much stronger. Thank you to the thousands who shared comments, and spread the word. In less than 2 days you helped our message reach 20K people on social media alone. Special thanks to my co-sponsors @DanKalbCityCouncil and City Attorney Barbara Parker.

    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

#Renters: You can’t be evicted now through May 31, 2020 if you live in a unit covered by Oakland’s Just Cause Ordinance. Your rent may not be increased beyond the Consumer Price Index if your unit is covered by the Rent Adjustment Ordinance. You cannot be charged late fees during this local emergency.

#SmallBusinesses + #Nonprofits: The commercial eviction moratorium applies to businesses with 100 employees or less and nonprofits.

Today’s win is one step forward. The work is far from over.

🚨🚨🚨 NEXT STEPS: We must convince and call on our state and federal government, banks and financial institutions to #SuspendRent for renters and small businesses + #SuspendMortgage payments with immediate forgiveness, and #HaltForeclosures. Cities DO NOT have the power to enact rent or mortgage suspension or foreclosure moratoriums. But today, Oakland City Council is calling on our government leaders and financial institutions to do so. We’re in this together — tenants, homeowners, landlords, small businesses.

Can you take these 3 actions?

    1. Contact Gov. Gavin Newsom at 916-445-2841 or at govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail.

    2. Act with Housing Now statewide campaign to #HaltForeclosures#SuspendRent#SuspendMortgage#ForgiveDebt at housingnowca.org.

    3. Act with Right To The City Alliance nationwide campaign at bit.ly/CancelRent.

Italy, the UK, France, and Spain have all passed / are passing efforts to forgive rents + mortgages. US cities are starting to call for this too. Let’s make this happen together. đź’šđź’™
